A Whole New World

Yes, that's a little shout out to Aladdin.

I've now worked my first week in Perth - 4 days of work and training, and then 4 days off to recover from my stint up north, and try to get everything under control. I've done well, but there's a little yet to do.

Upstairs: Bedroom mostly cleaned, clothes washed and put away. Bathroom in good nick tho the toilet still leaks so I need to fix that, somehow (tho I've tried and am at a bit of a loss!) Sewing room is a bit messy but that's ok.

Downstairs: clean and organised. All the things that lived in my donga are now safely ensconced in their new homes.

DVD and CD collection: Organised by colour! I keep seeing it with bookshelves in home decor magazines and I've always thought it was a stupid idea. But I feel much less strongly about cds than I do about books, so I actually really like it on this smaller scale. A little bit of fun.

Garden: Looking pretty good. I have snails now! And slugs! And small flying insects that have plagued my garden from the start. But I also have a mountainous mint plant, some happy looking bushy bits and pieces, and I've succeeded in replanting two things from cuttings which I'm a bit excited about. I have lots of herbs and they're all healthy. I have some elysum which I adore as it reminds me of mum's garden, where it grows in all the gaps between her plants. I have a mirror in the front courtyard which looks fantastic, and my little hanging cactus garden is now scattered throughout with quartz from Marillana and river stones from Weeli Wolli. The rest of my Yandi rock collection adorns the front fence. I've been paying lots of attention to my garden and have even given it fertiliser and seasol to try to help it deal with the pests. I've nuked the flying insects with bug spray, but I'm trying to go organic with the snails - I figure my garden isn't that big so there aren't tooo many places the little buggers can hide.

Wardrobe: I should have enough officey clothes to get me through until I've sewn a few... I've decided to buy a walking foot for my machine (assuming there is one) as I think it'll make sewing easier with silks and things, which I'm likely to use a lot. I bought a few things on Friday but I got sick of shopping pretty quickly!

And what about work?

Well I have a fantastic spot in the office, with a view over the city, and a lovely view of the river just behind me. We can watch the weather coming in and it's quite fascinating. I have a good "snowflake" with some fun people. My job is a bit open-ended at the moment, I haven't received a role profile so I don't have a lot of detail on what I'm doing. with 1SAP being a new introduction to the company, nobody really knows how much work I'll be doing in the 1SAP area. But I'm feeling pretty confident that I have the necessary skills to pull it off, and to define the role myself if necessary.

I've been enjoying coming home every night. I feel a lot more human than I probably have in quite a whie - i.e. less tired. I'm enjoying my little home, putting bits and pieces together to make it more and more my home. I have been missing Yandi and my Yandi crew though. It's hard to go from being in the middle of such a fun bunch of people, and to be so close to them, to suddenly feeling on the outer edge. Not that they have suddenly ignored me or anything, it's just that every week there are going to be jokes and things that I'll miss out on. I find myself wondering what they're all up to, and how hot it is! I'm a bit homesick for Yandi probably, as I knew I would be. But my fellow ex-Yandi ladies are taking care of me and giving me things to look forward to (like the Lior and WASO concert with Becky).

I've tried to be organised with things like my food (am following the Michelle Bridges 12 week menu plan which will help me get off to a good start). I am certainly eating a lot less than I did up north. I've significantly cut down on the alcohol too, and when I have treated myself to a glass of wine I've mixed it with soda water. I haven't done a lot of exercise yet, but we'll get to that next week once I'm a bit more settled! I've also found that not having a TV has been good, as I've ended up tidying the place or doing other things instead of plonking on the couch when I get home.

My biggest concern is that I remember being run off my feet all the time when I worked a normal week in Perth. I am conscious of trying to keep my life balanced between work, chores, socialising and relaxing. I hope I can hit the right balance!

Hobbies: I picked up a roadside collection cane chair the other day. I've cleaned it and removed the damaged seat, and plan to staple-gun some fabric to it to make it a new chair for my garden. Just need to buy the fabric now! It has a great shape, quite interesting with lots of character.

My sewing has taken a back seat while I've been organising everything else. However I did buy some new fabric for making pattern mock-ups. It's poplin, in two different pretty shades of green. With my 40% discount voucher it worked out cheaper to buy the poplin than to buy the same amount of calico! So it'll be fun making test versions in pretty fabric. I'm looking forward to having everything sorted out so I can get back to it!

What's outstanding, you ask?

The toilets need fixing.
I'm getting mum to help me choose three plates for my back courtyard wall. When they go up, the hanging basket struts should also come down.
Eventually I want to paint the downstairs toilet, but I don't consider that to be urgent.
I need to add another "step" to my shoe rack so Luke has somewhere to put his shoes that he leaves here.
I do want to get all my little mini photos up in the space between the cleaning cupboard and the toilet - again this isn't urgent.
I want three panoramic photos to put in the living room. I have two and maybe a third - just need to get them put on canvas.
I want to frame a tea towel I bought in Tasmania, that says "if you have a garden and a library, you have all you need."
I want to buy or make a little coffee table for my downstairs area.

And then, I'll be done!

I hope...

Anyway. New life, so far, so good.

the ass-end of a rabbit

The first time I ate rabbit was in Germany. I was fifteen and on school exchange in Gottingen. We went out to a warm, dark restaurant and I ordered the rabbit because it seemed unusual. It was rump, and it tasted like rump. In fact it tasted exactly like the ass-end of a rabbit and I didn't enjoy it much. Today I was reading Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries cookbook and encountered a recipe for rabbit. Not far from my little house is an Italian grocer, and next door is an Italian butcher. I knew he'd have rabbit - he has everything. I had all the ingredients for Nigel's recipe: rabbit, tarragon, onion, white wine and cream is added at the end. Then I spoke to the butcher himself, who said you can't go wrong with red wine, tomatoes, garlic and basil. Never one to choose a single option when there is room for two, I made them both. Both are fantastic! I quite impressed with myself. Excuse me, it's dinner time, I must go.

autumn sunrise

Autumn. Six in the morning and I've been wide awake since four. Tried to reclaim sleep for a while then the rooster crowed around five and my thoughts turned to the sunrise. I haven't watched one in a while, since I lived near the ocean several years ago and worked every second week in the desert with 5am starts. I prefer sunrise over sunset; it is so beautiful and so fleeting, analogous to life. With a coffee I came and sat in the garden. We are on a slope so I can see the ground fall away below me, the dam to my left and in front of me a tree, wearing her yellow autumn colours which are visible even in this still-dark of the morning. For a while - too long - I look at my garden and start to plan. An entertaining area to my left that overlooks the dam. A small wall to carve out an area of flatness. Curves that skate around the contours, bringing a sense of order. Then I wipe the slate clean and try to keep it more natural with just grass, garden, no walls of stone... Th
