The Rules

From a budgeting perspective, this hobby could go either way. It could be great for my savings, as I'll no longer buy things I never wear, but it could be terrible, as I'll fall in love with patterns and fabrics and get all excited...

...so I've made some rules
  1. Only buy fabric with a pattern in mind (thus buy the correct amount and don't end up with a massive stash)
  2. No more than 5 projects in the sewing queue - i.e. if I haven't sewn from every pattern at least once, I am not allowed to buy any more patterns. The one exception here is a pattern that I bought by mistake - clicked on the wrong button when I ordered it! I don't like it so I'm not making it.

The Sewing Queue As It currently Stands
  • Style Arc Kate Wrap Dress (completed)
  • Sewaholic Thurlow Trousers in blue fabric (in progress - one muslin pocket down!)
  • Sewaholic Cambie Dress in red fabric - both already purchased
  • Style Arc Melissa Blouse in muslin (depending on how it turns out, I will then make two silk tops - one white with polka dots that'll need lining, and a black one with white flower silhouettes)
  • Sewaholic Renfrew T-shirt in a yet-to-be-purchased fabric

Onto the Wishlist
That's it for the patterns already purchased. Then I'll be allowed to buy the next patterns on the wishlist, one at a time, in order:
  1. Self drafted Circle Skirt in something pretty like these, but cheaper! Pretty and dotty.
  2. Pencil Skirt - pattern yet to be determined
  3. Pattern Runway Scalloped Shorts $10 - though first I will see if I can simply change the hem of the Thurlow shorts to get a similar effect.
  4. Victory Patterns Ava Dress $12ish - this looks like a really cute dress, but first I will try to mish-mash a similar version from some other patterns I have. I'm not sure this style will suit me...
  5. Peter and the Wolf pants $30 - These are SO cool. I will try shortening them as well, to get 3/4 length pants for summer.
  6. Sol hoodie $10.95
  7. Dalliance Gloves $7.50 Because let's be honest, I will probably never actually get around to knitting a pair of gloves.

the ass-end of a rabbit

The first time I ate rabbit was in Germany. I was fifteen and on school exchange in Gottingen. We went out to a warm, dark restaurant and I ordered the rabbit because it seemed unusual. It was rump, and it tasted like rump. In fact it tasted exactly like the ass-end of a rabbit and I didn't enjoy it much. Today I was reading Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries cookbook and encountered a recipe for rabbit. Not far from my little house is an Italian grocer, and next door is an Italian butcher. I knew he'd have rabbit - he has everything. I had all the ingredients for Nigel's recipe: rabbit, tarragon, onion, white wine and cream is added at the end. Then I spoke to the butcher himself, who said you can't go wrong with red wine, tomatoes, garlic and basil. Never one to choose a single option when there is room for two, I made them both. Both are fantastic! I quite impressed with myself. Excuse me, it's dinner time, I must go.

autumn sunrise

Autumn. Six in the morning and I've been wide awake since four. Tried to reclaim sleep for a while then the rooster crowed around five and my thoughts turned to the sunrise. I haven't watched one in a while, since I lived near the ocean several years ago and worked every second week in the desert with 5am starts. I prefer sunrise over sunset; it is so beautiful and so fleeting, analogous to life. With a coffee I came and sat in the garden. We are on a slope so I can see the ground fall away below me, the dam to my left and in front of me a tree, wearing her yellow autumn colours which are visible even in this still-dark of the morning. For a while - too long - I look at my garden and start to plan. An entertaining area to my left that overlooks the dam. A small wall to carve out an area of flatness. Curves that skate around the contours, bringing a sense of order. Then I wipe the slate clean and try to keep it more natural with just grass, garden, no walls of stone... Th
